Speech and Language Therapists in the Children’s team work with children, their families and others who support them from age 0-19

Speech and Language Therapy promotes:

  • improved understanding of spoken language
  • clear and effective expressive language

  • healthy and strong voice use
  • successful interaction and communication
  • safe and effective eating drinking and swallowing

The service:

Children’s Speech and Language therapy provides:

  • Information, assessment, advice and treatment for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)
  • Information, assessment and management of eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties
  • Training and support for families and other people involved in the care of those with SLCN
  • Training for professionals who work with children and young people with SLCN
  • Targeted and specialist support to support communication development
  • Partnership working with our health and social care colleagues in the integrated services for children with disabilities at The Moor Lane Centre
  • Partnership working with the schools across the borough as well as early years settings in the private and voluntary sector
  • Partnership working with our colleagues at Achieving for Children
  • Participation in research and development and student therapist training in collaboration with City University and University College London.

We have an open referral system, accepting referrals from GPs, health visitors, education colleagues etc as well as parents.

Our service is delivered in different community settings including clinics, playgroups, special schools and specialist resource provisions and mainstream primary and secondary schools.

We work closely with other professionals in health, education and social care as well as with voluntary and charitable organisations in order to deliver an integrated service.

We operate an open referral service for children and young people in the Royal Borough of Kingston and we work with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs up to the point they leave full time education.

You may refer to our service for children who have:

  • Difficulties with saying sounds
  • Difficulty understanding spoken language
  • Difficulty using spoken language
  • Difficulty interacting and participating in a conversation with others
  • Difficulties with biting, sucking, chewing and/or swallowing foods and drinks

To make a referral you can:

  • Discuss with your Child’s nursery/school SENCo about a referral to the Children’s SLT service
  • Contact your GP
